On Friday 21 and Saturday 22 June at 7pm

Guided walk around the Karangahape Road area

Join for an exciting guided walking tour to celebrate Matariki!

Meet at the front of BNZ, 80 Queen Street Auckland.

Explore the Temporary Taonga toī that re-imagines & brings back to life the Waihorotiu valley. Prepare to be amazed at the celebration of light, form, scale and life that has been developed for Tūrama by the creative team of Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Manu), Ataahua Papa (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Ngāti Mahuta) and Angus Muir Design.

Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council) and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are proud to bring Tūrama and the Waihorotiu Valley to life as part of Matariki ki te Manawa, for all Tāmaki Makaurau to enjoy.

Whakamanatia, a kaupapa Māori community group led by Grayson Goffe, will guide these hīkoi (walking tours) alongside members of our resilient local communities.

Immersing in Character - Karangahape Road Hīkoi

Sunday 23 June at 11am and 7pm

312 Karangahape Road

Drawn from a Te ao Māori lens, our hīkoi focuses on the themes of

resilience (manawanuitanga), identity (tuākiritanga), connection and community, walking and talking amongst our taonga toi (public art) or tohu whenua (landmarks) that reflect the Mauri and unique character of Karangahape.

Hosted by local guide Grayson Goffe, from the Kaupapa Māori community group Whakamanatia, we begin our journey at the 2024 Matariki Hub.

This hīkoi will weave in many delights before returning back to the Matariki Hub at 312 Karangahape Road to close.

Matariki Manako Nui

Sunday 23 June - Sat 13 July

Various Locations

Three artists with strong connections to Karangahape Road — Kairau Bradley,’ Haser’, Louise Davis and Kirk Lafferty —  express their views and knowledge of Matariki through their chosen practices, a dynamic mixture of:

  • Modern Māori illustration;
  • weaving and textile creation;
  • and multi-exposure photography

Their art will bring bursts of colour and culture to K' Road, a trail seeped in history — the ridge above where tall ships arrived in the harbour below.

These artists are a reflection of Karangahape Road's diversity.

There will be a dawn opening of the Matariki Hub on Sunday 23 June and an official opening of the artwork trail "Matariki Manako Nui" on Thursday 23 June from 5pm till late.

Artworks by Haser, Louise Davis and Kirk Lafferty will be displayed in 9 locations along Karangahape Road. Their kaupapa celebrates the diversity and connection of our local community under the umbrella of Whakamaumahakatanga (remembrance), Tuakiritanga (identity, Atawhaitanga (kindness) and Kotahitanga (unity).

This journey celebrates resilient matriarchies, the calls of home through the concept of Karanga, and the vibrant communities that regard Karangahape Road as an Urban Sanctuary. Embracing the essence of Matariki, we highlight voices, sounds, stories, and people.

Created using Pickpath - a new platform for compelling interactive storytelling experiences, developed by Aotearoa-based artists.
