Last night for First Thursdays, five new artist residencies opened their doors to the public for the very first time! Delivered in association with Artspace Aotearoa and the Karangahape Road Business Association, this new artist residency programme hands empty K Road shopfronts over to local creatives, turning them into vibrant working studios and gallery spaces where the community can experience the art as it develops. The programme brings together five artist residencies, with three selected by Artspace Aotearoa—Moat (Ziggy Humberstone, Reuben Gabor), Mirror Spectrum Journal Division (Millie Dunstall), and Haumi e Studios (Carmel Aroha Salmanzadeh, Maraky Vowells, Kaliyah Lima)—and two selected by the Karangahape Business Association: Nayesha Waiti-Mulholland and Olivia McGregor. ARTISTS MOVE INTO EMPTY SHOPS ALONG K ROAD K Road is also proud to announce a new artist residency programme, delivered in association with Artspace Aotearoa. The programme brings together five artist residencies, with three selected by Artspace Aotearoa - Moat (Ziggy Humberstone, Reuben Gabor), Mirror Spectrum Journal Division (Millie Dunstall), and Haumi e Studios (Carmel Aroha Salmanzadeh, Maraky Vowells, Kaliyah Lima)—and two selected by the Karangahape Business Association: Nayesha Waiti-Mulholland and Olivia McGregor. The artists will be given the freedom to use the spaces as galleries and working studios, with the proviso that the public will have opportunities to see what they are creating and experience the spaces as the residencies develop. All five artist spaces will open to the public for the first time as part of First Thursdays on Thursday 6 August. Three of the residencies are located in Ironbank, with the two others located across the road in the former Smoove/Thrift Away shops. Join the team in celebrating both their new home and the gallery’s 40th anniversary with two exhibitions featuring works by 80 artists. This session features artist 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻, who will present works-in-progress for live critique and discussion between 6-7pm. On Saturday, 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 hosts the launch of ‘The Tip of the Tongue’, a new publication on work by 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀, produced alongside the artist’s recent exhibition at 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 in Gadigal Sydney - her first solo exhibition at a public gallery. We’re closing out July on Karangahape with a fresh lineup of exhibitions and art events for you to get along to. The exhibition considers the internet as a living archive shaped by countless voices and perspectives. This week on Karangahape, Lett Thomas opens a new solo exhibition ‘Deep Impact’ by Imogen Taylor on Wednesday evening, followed on Friday evening by Charles Ninow’s opening of a new solo exhibition ‘Songs for the cosmic sofa (booking.com)’ by Glenn Otto. On Thursday from 6pm, Artspace Aotearoa launches its new season of public crit sessions with artist Liam Philp, who will present works-in-progress for live critique and discussion. Audiences are invited to observe and participate as artists, curators, students, and visitors come together to explore ideas, process, and artistic development. This week on Karangahape the galleries bring together exhibitions, workshops, screenings, a publication launch and conversations celebrating the creativity and communities that make the precinct a vibrant cultural hub. Join Artspace Aotearoa on Friday evening for the opening of ‘CRIT: Art Learning Since 1987’ – a group exhibition exploring how artists, educators, and communities have learned inside, beside, outside, around, and against institutions in Aotearoa and beyond since the late 1980s. On Saturday as part of FAM on Karangahape Rd, they will also be running a free drop-in clay workshop from 12 – 2pm where participants can build a model of an imagined art school designed around creativity, curiosity, and connection. Also on Saturday, join Lett Thomas between 12 – 1pm for the publication launch of ‘Judy Millar: The Very Verge of Light’ as well as the last day of Peter Stichbury’s ‘Grand Guignol’.

WOW! We are still glowing from the aroha and joy that filled Te Karanga-a-Hape Matariki 2026. The day opened gently, with an early morning karakia led by @hamiora.bailey and waiata tautoko from our Street Choir, followed by a beautiful hot breakfast graciously hosted by Renee @cocoscantina and Clare @carmenjonesonkroad a beautiful start to a very special day. As Waipuna-ā-Rangi blessed the afternoon with a gentle rain, Pici and Open Cafe warmed our whānau with hearty boil-up in true kaimanaaki style. Mauri ora nui. As the sky darkened, Kaumātua Adrian Noda and @ngatiwhatuaorakei welcomed us all through mihi whakatau. Small Rave’s stunning Te Whakaruru-taha came to life, including Te Kōhanga, the nest within the tamariki cave, and Te Wairere, the waterfall lovingly created by First Rodeo and Nayesha Waiti-Mulholland, guiding whānau to the great Pōhutukawa in Myers Park, honouring those who have passed. The next whetū on this journey is Tupuārangi. Tupuārangi is the whetū connected to food gathered from above the ground. She watches over the fruits, berries and birds of the forests, reminding us of the abundance found within the ngahere and the natural world. For generations, Māori have looked to Tipuārangi as a guide for gathering kai from the trees and skies, acknowledging the interconnected relationships between people, plants, animals and the environment. As Matariki rises, Tipuārangi invites us to look upward and appreciate the richness that surrounds us. She encourages us to reflect on the gifts of the forest, the importance of biodiversity, and our responsibility to protect and nurture these taonga for future generations. The next whetū are Waitī and Waitā. These twin stars are connected to water and the sustenance it provides. Waitī watches over freshwater environments – rivers, lakes and streams – while Waitā is connected to the ocean and all that lives within it. Together, they remind us of our relationship with wai, the water that we come from and the importance of caring for te taiao that sustains us. For generations, Māori have looked to these whetū to understand the catching of food sources gathered from rivers and oceans, reinforcing our responsibility as kaitiaki of these precious resources. Today we continue our journey towards Matariki by introducing an artist who honours tradition and practice while forging new creative pathways. Introducing WAIWHAI. A descendant of Te Parawhau, Te Uriroroi and Ngāti Mahuta, WAIWHAI (Rāhana Tito-Taylor) is the founder of Noa Records and an inter-dimensional artist whose work moves between worlds. Guided by many teachers in both form and spirit, WAIWHAI is an exponent of taonga pūoro, psychedelic groove music, avant-garde beats and free drumming. A trailblazing force within the Tāmaki Makaurau and wider Aotearoa music scene since the mid-2010s, WAIWHAI creates music that is both deeply rooted and fearlessly exploratory. The first whetū we are honouring is Pōhutukawa Pōhutukawa is the whetū of remembrance. Before we celebrate, we pause to remember those who have passed and hold them close. Their stories, laughter, teachings and love continue to shape us, living on in the hearts of whānau and communities. Many Māori traditions speak to the journey of wairua through Te Rerenga Wairua, the departing place at the northernmost tip of Aotearoa. Pōhutukawa stands as a gentle companion in this time of remembrance, inviting us to think about those who have gone before us and honour them through whakapapa and aroha. During Te Karanga-a-Hape, Matariki 2026 on Thursday 9th July, you are invited to lay under the light of the Pōhutukawa tree at the top of Myers Park and offer a memory or whakaaro to the whetū of Pōhutukawa. Today we are bringing a fresh, grounded energy in this journey towards Matariki. Introducing our first artist, MĀ. Somewhere between a singer, rapper, spoken word poet, beatmaker, producer, and bandleader, MĀ is an autodidact Māori musician and artist from Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. Over the last three years, MĀ has won over audiences with a distinctly indigenous blend of abstract downtempo rap, DIY neo-soul, and lush ambient music. Born from grief, selflove, and an attentive awareness of the natural world, her songs value te taiao, whakapapa, manaakitanga, humour, and emotional honesty. MĀ is now entering a bold new phase of her career, currently developing her third album, a reo-rua, dance-focused, queer body of work being released in stages throughout 2026. This week on Wednesday evening, join 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 for the opening of Someday My Prince Will Come, a solo exhibition by 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗯𝘆 presenting a new collection of images taken at Disneyland. Installed in loose constellations across the gallery, the works accumulate like fragments of a larger narrative, oscillating between documents of personal reflection and a mood board for collective mythology in crisis.  
On Friday evening, 𝗧𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗶 opens their new exhibition of work by six students from across Tāmaki Makaurau. Developed through an open invitation, the exhibition provides a platform for emerging artists to present work outside of their respective academic institutions, highlighting the breadth, diversity, and current concerns of Pacific creative practice at an early stage of development.

As the first release of Te Karanga-a-Hape, Matariki 2026 moved through the weekend, we are reflecting with Matariki over the last year through some special photos. These whakaahua, photographs, are from Whaia te Waiora, Matariki 2025. Through kaupapa-led activations, window displays, projections and much more, the community gathered together to honour the past, celebrate the present and look toward the future. Nau mai ki a Matariki me Te Karanga-a-Hape! One of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most beloved Matariki celebrations returns on Thursday 9 July, transforming Karangahape Road into a free, all-day journey of light, music, storytelling and connection. Te Karanga-a-Hape invites communities from across Tāmaki Makaurau and beyond to gather, reflect and celebrate the Māori New Year together. The entire length of the road will come alive and you can connect with the stars of Matariki through tāonga toi special art installations, pūoro sound and live music, wānanga and making, kanikani dancing and delicious kai. At 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵 by 𝗥𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗵 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 explores the shifting role of the artist through a series of 20 paintings — pulling together references and characteristics associated with artists throughout history. From the marbled clay dug up on Pitt Street for the City Rail Link, to the hemp bales sourced from @thehempstore the materials for a more sustainable city are already under our feet. Working across film, sound and text, her practice explores the politics of recording personal stories — questioning whose voices are seen, remembered, and valued. 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗚𝗨𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗶 𝗧𝘂̄ kicks off a new month of shows with four new printmaking exhibitions in the lead up to 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘢 — coming soon to Karangahape Road early May. Head along Wednesday evening to celebrate a curated mix of solo and group exhibitions exploring printmaking. On Thursday night, head to 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 for a public talk by 𝗟𝗶’𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗮 𝗗𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗜𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮-𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻, tracing the origins of the Leulumoega School of Fine Arts — from its 1890 beginnings as one of the Pacific’s earliest regional trades schools to its legacy today. Through this lens, the work of 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗼 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗶’𝗶 reflects a quiet yet powerful Samoan renaissance movement emerging in the early 1980s. Wrap up the week on Friday night at 𝗧𝗶𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 with the opening of 𝘜𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥 — a group exhibition continuing the gallery’s long-standing commitment to presenting Aboriginal artists in Aotearoa. Featuring works from Papunya Tula, the art centre behind the Western Desert Painting Movement, this is a must-see over the coming month.
